A few things I recently posted to AO3:
  • a long SGA podfic for the Podfic Big Bang: Sihaya Black's And Hope (John/Rodney, AU, drama and romance, 03:35:12)
  • an HR fanart for Easter Ilya's Easter Treat (featuring Shane in bunny ears) (not quite SFW: bare torsos)
  • and just now, Ecology, a meta poem about the rise and complexities of HR as a speedrun megafandom, basically me processing my last post. Also it's National Poetry Month in the US.

And now, time for a nice cup of tea.

I've been protected from HR fandom wank by only being active on DW and tumblr, but it's affecting AO3 as well now. As a megafandom doing a speedrun, I gather Heated Rivalry has attracted a fair number of idiots and trolls, and maybe just new fans ignorant of fandom etiquette, over on crap sites like twitter and instagram. I think hanging out in those places and on facebook can also turn you to the dark side teach you bad habits, maybe. Celestial_abyss who's podficcing OpalApparition's WIP Wolfbird, wrote an etiquette post about it.

So, a few BNF HR writers (OpalApparition being one) have I gather been trolled and harassed in those places (but honestly, why be on instagram or twitter at all!) and have reacted in a hurt/angry way by going on hiatus or, now, with Evilharlowe, a writer I enjoy, by deleting their entire AO3 profile and all works. Crap! I mean, their main WIP was a bit worrying as the projected chapter count kept climbing from 50 to 100 to 200 (they made it to just over 100), which seemed either unrealistic or not great for the writer's wellbeing, but still. They wrote a lot of other excellent stuff but are presumably too pissed off or unhappy to keep posting. The works haven't been made anon or orphaned, either, which feels like an angry reaction. Jesus, all that work, all those excellent fics, just gone from AO3. Fuck.

I have a lot of their fics saved as I usually read longer stuff as ebooks and EH almost never wrote short, but I don't have the latest updates on their two main WIPs. However, if you want a copy of any their completed works, hit me up in a message as I should have most of them, and can convert to any format you like.

But yeah, bummer.

ETA: I've located 14 saved Evilharlowe fics, plus 1 extra from Wayback, so 15. Not 'Heated Designation', unfortunately, so if anyone has any of that one, hit me up! Here's a link to them all saved in gdrive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14Gh16_GJ7eN31XrkIzLKB0t4GaHIyBXC
(Oops, sorry, last link was wrong. Should be to the folder now)

To the Moon

I'm old enough to remember the Apollo missions. It makes me happy to see a revival to the moon missions and the excitement it brings to a new generation.

Courtesy of the YouTube algorithm, which has clearly been corrupted by Heated Rivalry, and a good thing, too.

New music vid by Minute Taker featuring a gay love story in a Big Brother-like dystopia, but with a happy ending. The song's ok, but it's the storytelling that wins here.

Daniel's third 'death' is an alien mind whammy for the rest of SG-1 which causes a lack of interest in beer, cars to be in the way of hockey sticks, and yet another conversation on retirement... whilst still in season one... Meanwhile Daniel is sleeping with the fishes. Aquatic Tuplo wants Daniel to find his girlfriend four thousand years in the past, but Danny done forgot his Tardis, so they have to go digging around in his head for answers. Too bad he didn't think to catch an actual goa'uld, what with the genetic memory and all... After a little digging in Sam's head also, the team head back to witness Daniel doing his little bond girl strut from the ocean. MOIST!

LOVED the art. Fun, colorful, cartoony, and expressive. Brings to mind Matt Groening and John Allison.

LOVED that there's more trans and genderqueer characters than you can shake a stick at.

LOVED the framing device with the kids in the museum.

LIKED the first half of the book with the Spiritual Association of Peers, a secretive community/cult that lives in the lawless exurbs outside the New York City Administrative and Security Territory and refuses to talk to the researcher sent to research them.

LIKED our hapless trans man Lucius Pasternak, researcher, who's just trying to do his job.

NOT KEEN on the second half of the book with the visions and the monster(s) as a metaphor for, idk, self-loathing or capitalism or whatever. It's not a trope I have a natural affinity for and this didn't sell me on it. I want real monsters or I want self-loathing, but don't outsource the problem. The romance also felt whatever. There was chemistry between them, but little else.

UNSATISFIED by the ending, which seems to be resolved in passing by two randos, but also raises a lot of big questions that go unanswered and left me skeptical.

IN SHORT, the first half is kind of a mystery where you're getting to know the players and the setting, and the second half is a kind of gory fairy tale where it's about types of people and social movements, big picture stuff, and I felt like it didn't really match up with the first half.

BUT I'm always glad to read something from Lubchansky and this was a fun way to spend some time.

CONTAINS: some misgendering, including from the robotic health care system; nudity; sex; animal harm (scraggly and aggressive wild bear); violence; cartoon blood and guts; cartoon cops and their cartoon blood and guts.

I've been quiet in terms of general journaling, mostly as I've been busy with projects. I've almost finished my SGA podfic for the podfic big bang, should be posting it in 2-3 days. Am now starting my first HR podfic, which will be interesting as I'm not going to be able to do Ilya's accent. But podficcers mostly don't attempt accents in podfics - except in HR, for Ilya, perhaps encouraged by Connor Storrie's virtuoso performance. A high bar.

I'm still reading lots of HR fanfic and not really interested in anything else, including profic. And writing. Have started my Hollanov big bang fic and have an AU WIP going as well. I can see that I'm going to lean pretty heavily towards writing AUs and fics that require bugger all knowledge of hockey, because I don't have any! But I'm writing, which feels really good.

It's early autumn here, a dry March until rain started yesterday, and now a much-needed soak. I should be tidying and mulching my garden beds, but my energy's mostly been directed to indoors creative stuff. Caught up with friends yesterday for a yummy Thai dinner, and it's hot cross bun time of year, so things have been excellent on the food front.

Not excellent at all elsewhere in the world, of course. I hope you're all okay and, for the northerners, enjoying spring. Hugs to you all.

I wrote another HR fic, one I've been thinking about for a while, but it wanted to come out now. It's a therapy session with Galina, set a bit after the end of The Long Game, in which Ilya and Galina finally explore his tendency to idealize Irina. About 2100 words, background Shane/Ilya.

Birds singing oldies

Does anyone know Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles? Probably not; it goes back to 1979. But I listen to the "Oldies" station on the car radio, or if I want music in the house, and I've heard it often enough that I recognize it.

The entrance to the chorus (?) is a female voice singing, "Oh, ah-oh!" (At about the 30-second mark on the video.)

So Monday evening, I was out cleaning pump filters for the pond and water tubs, and a bird was calling nearby. I swear, part of his call matched the "ah-oh" in cadence and note-interval. (My ear isn't good enough to know if it was the right notes, or just the right relationship between notes.) It was distinct enough, and recognizable enough, that it immediately reminded me of the song, and there I was, trying to sing it.

(Unfortunately -- or maybe fortunately? -- I know only four lines of the song, two of which are, "Video Killed the Radio Star." LOL!)

I wasn't able to get a visual sighting of the bird, but it wasn't one I recognize by call. We don't have that many varieties of birds around here, and I know most of the calls. (House finch, dove, mockingbird, grackle, meadowlark, quail are most common.) It could have been passing through, heading for more northern latitudes. I'll be alert for hearing it again, but it could well have been a one-time occurrence.

Nothing big, here. Just a possibly interesting snippet of outdoor life in rural New Mexico.

Today we had the most sunshine than we've had in a month, possibly two. *happy dances*

Over the last three weeks, I got a ton of adulting done. And even fit a short trip to Cleveland to visit one of my fandom friends. She helped me come up with an excellent idea for First Touch, one of my soulmate prompts.

Meanwhile, I finished a third story for the [community profile] 5soulmates challenge. You can find it here:

Printed on Your Skin (4103 words)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Soulmates
Summary:

Touching your soulmate leaves fingerprints.

I have a bunch of fanfic to catch up on. This is not a hardship. :)

Update to anti-ICE tracking app

Based on comments under his first entry, the guy who developed the app has made some changes and improvements. He added a "warrant canary," and expanded the map -- it now can toggle between "within 25 miles" and "all sightings." He also adds some computery-type identification that people can verify.

So, if folks were hesitant to try it before, check out the new post. It might answer your questions and concerns.

And again, feel free to pass this link and/or info on wherever you think it might be useful.

The hunter gets captured by the game by castxt

The song's a light, jazzy Blondie number about a hunter being captured by the game or prey they're stalking - the hunter being Ilya, pursuing Shane. Beautiful, tight editing, uses the whole song, and the ending is just gorgeous.

Thanks to [personal profile] squidgiepdx for the reminder to post that I exist. I was laid off back in early October of last year, which both sucked and was expected -- I was never going to obey the Return to Work directive because I'm disabled, but I was prepared to sue them if they just up and fired me because of it. As it turned out, though, they let go 15% of the company due to "strategic shifts to higher-margin areas such as custom AI chip design." lol. The severance package was really sweet, so I just went with it. I'm still scoring off their free insurance through the end of the month.

It feels weird to be coasting along while the world burns. I am protesting, writing letters, and donating where I can. I'm enjoying doing volunteer work at a food pantry and babysitting for my grand-niece: she just turned 7 months and she's painfully cute and mischievous; so alert and constantly needing enrichment because she despises being bored. She has my outsized big toe.

I'm struggling with my migraines in the heat, but back at pottery and crocheting.

Today, Rocket locked herself out of the apartment in the hallway for a couple of hours and I spent the rest of the day coddling her and giving her treats and snuggles.

Anyway, that's me. How's you? Please give me the goods.
