I've been doing lists in my journal -- not all-inclusive, just stories I like. Almost all are J/D -- they'll be noted if not. Some of the categories are getting long, and I'll probably split them into their own posts soon, but I have all my rec lists linked and tagged.
Anyhoo, for Aliens Made Them Do It, Ascension/Descension, AU, Clone, Crossover, Genderfuck, Local Customs, Quantum Mirror, Road Trip, Robot, Slave, Stranded, Telepathy, and Time fics, see my Stargate SG-1 tropes (http://green-grrl.livejournal.com/14286.html) list.
When you're compiling your lists, do you add in every fic that you can find under that category, or just your favourites?
If it's the former, when you split these up, would you let me know? You've done so much hard work over there, I'd like to add those posts to the thematic lists I have in memories (if that's okay by you). I don't want to compile lists if someone has already put in such a fantastic effort :D
I am totally in awe of your fic collecting skills -- I love your AU list! However my lists are personal favorites only, not comprehensive. Though if you (or anyone so inspired) want to do comprehensive theme posts, you are more than welcome to grab any or all of my lists as a starting point.
I plan on doing more thematic posts in the near future. I would love to grab your lists as a starting point. Would there be any way for you to send me a doc. of them? You've done so much hard work with all the coding, links and summaries - it'd be a shame to waste them.
I might be able to help too. I have a big file where I write down the name and author of every fic I read, along with a quick summary (though I'm sure I've missed a fic here and there). I don't think I'd share the list with an author, since I make sure to mention when I don't like a fic, but I've got a few hundred on there. Maybe I could tease out some theme-y info.
That would be a great help! I've got (OMG I can't believe it) 684 J/D fics saved on my HD. I don't think I want to count my McShep's.
I have them saved into general folders mostly; e.g. angst/drama, humour, etc but have created special folders for the ones I've focussed on; e.g. post-Origin, AU, stranded, robots, etc. I keep a record of the author name and link on file.
What sort of pairings in the SG universe do you read? Does your summary also include links?
I read 95% J/D slash, the rest is mostly gen. I only read het when it's background to the slash, like Jack sleeping with a woman in the Garden series, or Daniel remembering Sha're.
I've got around 800 fics in my file, no links (but those wouldn't be too hard to find). I also have over 3000 fics on my HD that someone gave me a few months ago, and I'm trying to archive new fics I read as well.
I'll futz with the file today, see if I can come up with anything useful.
That would be awesome. green_grrl sent me a copy of her lists, although they are more recs on a particular theme.
What's the best way to do this? I'm not sure how heavily you want to be involved, and don't want to burden you. Should I just wait until I've decided on what thematic list I want to compile and then poke you for a list of titles? Or did you want to be more involved in the comm than that?
I only ask because green_grrl expressed an interest in keeping an eye on tags and watching out for fics with me so I've made her a moderator, so a third pair of eyes, or someone that would be willing to assist me or do the actual coding, etc for a thematic list entry would be very much appreciated.
Please don't feel that you have to be any more involved then what you would like. I have no idea how busy people are in RL and with other commitments on LJ, so I won't be offended if you tell me no :-)
I would not necessarily be averse to sending you my list, except there are lots of personal comments, like if I thought a story was boring or poorly written or whatever. If you want me to scour my list for themes, though, I'd be happy to do that. And certainly I can help with coding--the first list is a pain, but upkeep should be pretty easy.
I've done a few J/D lists by this stage and they can be found here (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=stargate_search&keyword=Thematic+Lists&filter=all). I've tried to be as comprehensive as possible, but I may have missed some stories.
Would you like to do a search of your list to see if there are any stories to add, or would you prefer to start working on a new list? I have a few that can be started at any time. Like you said in your previous comments, you wouldn't necessarily want people reading your personal opinions of the stories, but if you have a summary and/or a link, that would be awesome.
If you'd like to be part of an ongoing thing with this, I can grant you moderator status so you have the ability to add tags to the main list just like green_grrl can.
If you look in the sidebar of the comm, under 'Useful Sites' you will find the categories of 'Slash Archives' and 'Thematic Archives.' A lot of those will allow you to search for specific stories.
here's the list of _minxy_'s favorite J/D slash fanfic. It ranges from long, detailed plot-heavy fic to pure pwp, and all the themes are mixed in together, in her own order. I think she updates this list regularly, but you can also go back through her regular posts and see if there's stuff she hasn't added yet. She's always got something new and interesting (usually many) in every rec post. They are of course her own favorites, but she's got pretty good taste.
